Alfred is a town in Allegany County, New York. The area is considered part of the rural Southern Tier region. The closest large city is Rochester, approximately eighty miles north. The smaller city of Corning is approximately fifty miles east and the even smaller city of Hornell is ten miles northeast. Within the town is the Village of Alfred, and two hamlets named Alfred Station and Five Corners. , the town population was estimated at 5,000, with a majority of the population belonging to the Village of Alfred.
