Attica is a town in Wyoming County, New York. It is part of the Western New York region. It is around thirty-five miles east of the city of Buffalo. Attica covers thirty-six square miles. The town was established in 1811. Inside the town is a village that shares the town’s name, Attica. Two hamlets make up the town as well. They are known as Attica Center and Vernal Corners.

The town is home of the Attica Correctional Facility, location of the infamous prison riot. The Attica Prison Rebellion was the deadliest prison riot in United States history and played a significant role in the prisoner’s rights movement that asked for better living conditions. The prison is still active to this day.

As of August of 2022, the town population was 8,102. Prisoners are considered town residents according to the census. Thus, around two thousand town “residents” are actually prisoners.

Attica is served by two state routes, several county routes, and a handful of smaller, local roads. Most roads head towards the village in the north-west corner of town. New York State Route 98 (Creek Road) cuts through town along the western line heading north and south. Before leaving town, it passes through the Hamlet of Sierks. The east and south part of town are accessible by New York State Route 238 (NYS-238).

The speed in Attica fluctuates drastically. Some parts of the road allow motorists to travel at 55 mph then quickly drop down to 30 mph with little warning. This occurs on NYS-98 right as you approach the Forest Hills Cemetery. The village police often run speed checks in this area.
