The Town of Chautauqua surrounds the upper west end of Lake Chautauqua. Along the lake are two major roads, one on each side. Running parallel to the western lake edge is New York State Route 394 (West Lake Road), running north-south. It enters town from the south and passes through several hamlets before intersecting with New York State Route 430 (East Chautauqua Street) in the Hamlet of Mayville. It continues on past the northern town boundary and leads to the Town and Village of Westfield.

NYS-430 is the major road that follows along the eastern part of Lake Chautauqua. Like NYS-394 it follows along the lake edge until it turns west-southwest towards Mayville. It passes through the hamlet and continues until it reaches the south-west Hamlet of Summerdale. Passing Summerdale, it heads south until it crosses the town border. It leads motorists to the neighboring town of Sherman.

Just south of town is Interstate 86 (Southern Tier Expressway). Both NYS-394 and NYS-430 directly connect to the interstate in some way. Both state routes see a significant amount of traffic compared to the other roads in town for this very reason. The remainder of the town is served primarily by county routes and smaller local roads. All roads lead to either NYS-394 or NYS-430.
