Dunkirk is a city in Chautauqua County, New York. The city is adjacent to a town that goes by the same name, Dunkirk. Physically the city is surrounded by the town on the east and west side, Lake Erie to the north, and Fredonia on the south. , the city had a population of around 12,500. Despite being separate entities, the town and city both were named Dunkirk due to the harbor resembling Dunkerque, France.
