There are two courts in Gainesville. One for the town and one for the village. These courts physically share the same location. The town court handles all criminal cases, small claims, and traffic violations issued throughout the town.
The town does not have its own police force. They received police coverage from the New York State Police and the Wyoming County Sheriff’s Department. Both have the authority to conduct traffic stops and issue tickets.
The town’s arterial road is where most charges originate. New York State Route 19 (NYS-19) cuts through town heading north and south. The authorities tend to set up speed traps along this road. There are minimal speed limit signs posted on NYS-19. This results in frequent traffic stops for speeding. Motorists are often cited for going well above the 55 mph state speed limit. In fact, it is not uncommon to reach 70 or even 80 mph on long straight roads such as these. Being cited for such a high speed is very costly.
