Geneseo is a village in Livingston County, New York. It is located just west of Conesus Lake and approximately forty miles south of Rochester. Conesus Lake is the westernmost of the eleven Finger Lakes. The village is within the Town of Geneseo. Several state and county routes enter the village from different directions. From the northeast corner, via Batavia, comes New York State Route 63. It cuts into the village at its southwest corner before quickly leaving to the south in the direction of Dansville. New York State Route 39 (Avon - Geneseo Road) comes from Avon directly to the north of the village. When Route 39 reaches the downtown area, it is renamed Main Street. Its southern terminus is in the village. From the east via Livonia comes US-20A (Lakeville Road). As Route 20a enters the village it is named South Street. It is the main east-west street in the village. In the center of the village, NYS-20A turns south, is renamed Mt. Morris Road, and exits the village towards Mount Morris. From the southeast via East Groveland comes County Route 10 (Groveland Road). Its northern terminus is at South Street in the village.

Most traffic tickets originate on the aforementioned roads. As these roads enter the village, the speed limit is typically reduced from 55 mph to 30 mph. Many motorists do not notice the reduced speed or do not adjust properly. Speeding tickets can be issued by officers of the Geneseo Police Department, troopers of the New York State Police, and deputies of the Livingston County Sheriff's Office. Additionally, on SUNY campus grounds, traffic tickets can be issued by officers of the University Police Department. All violations alleged to have occurred in the village are adjudicated in the Geneseo Village Court. The court shares its courtroom and some court personnel with the Geneseo Town Court.
