Lancaster is the name of town and village in Erie County, New York. The village is contained within the town. Lancaster is around fifteen miles east of Buffalo and consists mainly of residential communities serving as the suburbs of Buffalo. The total population is around forty thousand. The village and town are septate entities with separate governing bodies, though they share police and fire departments. The town and village have separate justice courts, each handling cases from their respective jurisdictions.
The town and village court adjudicate traffic cases. Two roads in Lancaster are the main source for traffic violations. The New York State Thruway traverses through the northern portion of the town. The speed limit is 65 mph. Motorists traveling at speeds substantially over the limit will typically be stopped by New York State Police.
The second main source is US-20 (Broadway). This is the main road and commercial hub of Lancaster. The speed limit is reduced as the US-20 gets into the downtown area, i.e. the Village of Lancaster and the Village of Depew. Motorists often fail to notice the reduced speed limit thereby turning the road into a major speed trap. Other important east-west roads are Genesee Street (NYS-33), Pleasant View Drive (CR-161), Walden Avenue (NY-952Q), and William Street (CR-338). Important north-south roads include Central Avenue (CR-57), Pavement Road (CR-139), and Ransom Road (CR-155).
The New York State Police typically conduct traffic stops on the highways and the Lancaster Police Department typically conduct traffic stops on the local roads. Thruway tickets are handled by the Lancaster Town Court. Tickets issued on the local roads can go to the town court or the village court, depending on the exact location of the alleged violation.
