Lockport is the name of a town in Niagara County, New York. It is located approximately thirty miles northeast of Buffalo and approximately twenty miles east of Niagara Falls. The town was established in 1824 by Quaker settlers. Lockport is split in half by the Erie Canal and derives its name from the set of water locks that were built to let ships traverse the 60-foot drop in elevation along the canal., the town population was estimated at 20,300. Within the town is the City of Lockport. The city is smaller than the town but has a higher population. The town and city are governed separately.
