Monroe County is a county in upstate New York State. It is part of the Western New York region and Finger Lakes region. It covers one thousand, three hundred and sixty-seven square miles. The county was formed in 1821 and named after James Monroe, a Founding Father and the fifth president of the United States.
Wayne County borders to the east, Orleans County to the west, Ontario County to the southeast, Genesee County to the southwest, and Livingston County to the south. Lake Ontario forms the northern county line. Monroe County encompasses twenty towns and one city, Rochester, which is the county seat., The population of Monroe County was approximately 755,000.
