Olean is a town in Cattaraugus County, New York. It is considered part of the Southern Tier region and Western New York region. The town is approximately five miles north of the Pennsylvania state line and approximately seventy-five miles southeast of the city of Buffalo. In the center of the town is the small City of Olean. , the town population was estimated at 1,850. The town encompasses the hamlets of Barnum and Haydenville. Olean gets its name from the Latin word for oil, which was discovered in the early 19th century.
