WALES, NEW YORK

Wales is a town in Erie County, New York. It is southeast of Buffalo and around thirty minutes from the city’s downtown. The town population, as of July of 2020, was 2,997. The early settlers named the town after the country of Wales because of its green fields and hills. The town’s two main population areas are the hamlets of South Wales and Wales Center.

TRAFFIC TICKET IN WALES

The Aurora Expressway (NYS-400) originates on the outskirts of Buffalo and runs southeast. Out of Buffalo, it is a four lane highway, two lanes in each direction, with a grassy median. The speed limit is 65 mph. The NYS-400 ends at it runs southeast into the Town of Wales and the Hamlet of South Wales. The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph and then NYS-400 becomes Route 16 (NYS-16). Route 16 is one lane in each direction and the speed limit is reduced to 40 mph. A short distance later, the speed limit is reduced again to 35 mph. Motorists do not always adjust to the lower speed limits and are stopped and ticketed.

Another speed trap is Route 20A. This route is used to bypass the I-390 and I-90 between Buffalo and the southeastern parts of the state. In Wales, the speed limit is 45 mph and gets reduced to 35 mph going into Wales Center. A lot of motorists are not from the area, not familiar with the roads and signs, and end up being stopped for speeding.

Other main streets in Wales are Center Line Road (CR-175), Strykersville Road (NYS-78), Warner Hill Road (CR-390), and Hunters Creek Road (CR-382). Traffic stops can be conducted by state troopers or county sheriffs. All traffic violation in Wales are adjudicated in the Town of Wales Justice Court.
