Yates is a town in Orleans County, New York. It sits on the southern shore of Lake Ontario, around fifty miles northwest of Rochester and around fifty miles northeast of Niagara Falls. Yates is mostly farmland and covers thirty-seven square miles. The town includes the Village of Lyndonville. It serves as the downtown area and is the location of most town offices. There are also the hamlets of County Line, Millers, and Yates Corners., the total population was estimated at 2,500. Yates was first settled in 1809. In 1822, it obtained its township status. For a brief period of time, the town went by the name “Northton.” It is not clear why the name was changed; however, the town was eventually renamed after Joseph C. Yates, governor of New York at the time. The village of Lyndonville was incorporated in 1903.

New York State Route 18 (Roosevelt Highway) is the town’s main road. It runs east and west across Yates. NYS-18 intersects with several roads that run north and south, including the main north-south bound road, County Route 63 (North Lyndonville Road). CR-63 passes through the village as it approaches the southern town line. It meets County Route 29 (Platten Road) in the village square. CR-29 runs east and west through the southeast part of town. CR-63 meets another road near the lake. That road is County Route 82 (West Lake Shore Road). It runs parallel to the shoreline heading east and west.
Yates does not have a town police department. All traffic violations in Yates are issued by either the New York State Police or the Orleans County Sheriff’s Office. The violations are made answerable to the Yates Town Court (Town of Yates Justice Court). The main roads generate most of the tickets. Common charges include speeding, driving with suspended privileges, disobeying a traffic control device, unlicensed operator, and driver’s view obstructed.
