Traffic Tickets in Caledonia
There are two justice courts in Caledonia. One is for the town and the other is for the village. They are both located in the same building and share the same court staff. The village has a small police force that issues tickets answerable to the village court. Road patrol outside of the village is conducted by the New York State Police or the Livingston County Sheriff’s Department. Any ticket issued outside the village but inside the town is answerable to the town court. The most common charge in both courts is speeding. Speeding tickets are mostly issued near the village boundary. The speed limit in the village is 30 miles per hour. Outside of the village, the speed limit fluctuates between 55 and 30 miles per hour.
There are two main roads that make their way towards the village center. They are New York State Route 5 (Caledonia Leroy Road) and New York State Route 36 (Leicester Road). NYS-5 enters town from the west and south-east. NYS-36 enters from the north and south. They merge in the central part of the village.
There is a particular area of the village where motorists need to be extra cautious. There is a school zone established on NYS-36 for the Cal-Mum High School and Caledonia-Mumford Elementary School. It is located near the village’s northern boundary. This school zone drops the speed limit from 30 to 20 miles per hour. Ample time is given to adjust speed; however motorists still miss the sign and end up unintentionally speeding. Traffic offenses committed in a school zone are a serious matter. They come with possible double fines. If you were issued a ticket in a school zone, or anywhere else for that matter, it is probably imperative that you speak with a dedicated traffic attorney.
