Village of Nunda, New York
Nunda (generally pronounced “none-day”) is a village in Livingston County, New York. It is part of the Finger Lakes region. The closest large city is Rochester, approximately fifty miles north of the village. The name originates from the Seneca Language and is understood to mean “where the valley meets the hills”. The village is within the Town of Nunda. , the village population was estimated at 1,125. It is the town’s main population area.

There are two main roads in the village. Running east-west is New York State Route (NYS-436). If you continue east, you will get to North Dansville and the I-390. If you continue west, you will get to the Town of Genesee Falls. In the village, Route 436 is named Portage Street and Mill Street. Running north-south is New York State Route 408 (NYS-408). Taking Route 408 north will eventually take you to Mount Morris. Taking it south will lead you to Portage. In the village, Route 408 is named South State Street and North State Street. Route 436 and Route 408 intersect in the center of the village.
The village does not have its own police department. They receive police services from the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office and the New York State Police. Both are authorized to conduct vehicle stops upon probable cause of a traffic violation. All citations issued in the village are made answerable to the Village of Nunda Justice Court (Nunda Village Court). There is also the Nunda Town Court that has jurisdiction over the rest of the town outside of the village. As of January of 2024, there was little practical difference between the two, as they shared a courtroom and court personnel.
