West Seneca is a town in Erie County, New York, just outside of Buffalo. Seneca is the name of a Native American tribe that originally inhabited the area. The Town of Seneca in Ontario County is around 100 miles away from West Seneca. Seneca and West Seneca have nothing to do with each other. Originally there were two towns named Seneca, leading to confusion, so the Seneca in Erie County changed its name to West Seneca.
West Seneca is, for the most part, made up of a number of different residential communities serving as one of the suburbs of Buffalo. The total population, as of 2010, was 44,711. The town has its own court that has jurisdiction over a number of different legal matters, but the court mostly adjudicates traffic tickets. In fact, West Seneca is one of the busiest justice courts in the entire New York State due to its volume of traffic tickets.
Most of West Seneca’s traffic violations originate on the Interstate-90 (New York State Thruway). A long stretch of the I-90 runs a straight north-south line through West Seneca and motorists often fail to obey the speed limit. This is more relevant with Canadian drivers who often do not correctly acclimate to the difference between miles per hour and kilometers per hour.
Also in West Seneca, is the Aurora Expressway (NYS-400) and a portion of the Southern Expressway (US-219). The New York State Police patrol the highways and local police patrol other main roads. Other busy roadways in West Seneca include Southwestern Boulevard (US-20), Seneca Street (NY-16), Centre Road (NYS-16), Transit Road (NYS-78), Harlem Road/Orchard Park Road (NY-240), Union Road (NYS-277), and Clinton Street (NYS-354).
