Allegany is a village in Cattaraugus County, New York. It is located in a remote area of southwestern New York, just north of the Pennsylvania state line. The closest large city is Buffalo, approximately seventy miles to the north. The small city of Salamanca is approximately fifteen miles west. The village is located in the center of the Town of Allegany. , the village population was estimated at 1,600. Allegany is believed to have gotten its name from either the Allegewi tribe that lived in the area, or the Native American word for beautiful.
