Town of Nunda, New York

Nunda (pronounced “none-day”) is a town in Livingston County, New York. The name “Nunda” was derived from the local Seneca Native American Tribe. In their language, “nunda” means “where the valley meets the hills.

Nunda covers thirty-seven square miles in total. The area of the town is considered part of the Finger Lakes region and the Western New York region. Nunda is approximately fifty miles south of Rochester and approximately sixty miles southeast of Buffalo. Within the town, there is a village of Nunda. Along with the village, the town encompasses the hamlets of Barkertown, Coopersville, and Dalton., the total was estimated at 2,700. The population of Nunda peaked in the 1840’s at around four thousand residents. The main cause of growth was the development of the Genesee Valley Canal. It was over 100 miles long, connecting the Erie Canal in Rochester with the Allegheny River. The subsequent development of railroads made the Genesee Valley Canal obsolete. This historic transportation corridor is now being transformed into the “Genesee Valley Greenway”, a 90-mile multi-use trail.
